State Employee's Disciplinary Action Cancelled after Consultation

April 2026

A North Carolina career state employee called us after being placed on disciplinary suspension. In consultation, we discussed the career state employee disciplinary process, and what to expect at various stages of the grievance process, during which an employee may not be directly represented by an attorney. Armed with valuable information, the worker was able to approach the grievance process  with confidence. The disciplinary investigation was resolved without any actual discipline, and they returned to work.

A cancelled disciplinary investigation is a best-case scenario! It is important for the state employees to understand their rights, and how best to assert those rights during the disciplinary process.

We have experience counseling and representing North Carolina career state employees in every stage of the disciplinary process, including at hearings at the North Carolina Office of Administrative Hearings. North Carolina's robust protections for its valuable state employees are most effective for a worker who knows their rights and timely asserts them.

Be careful not to miss strict deadlines for grievances, and then reach out for a consultation, ASAP!
